Business Manager
DESCRIPTION:
Since it’s inception in
2002, the Centre for Global Health Research (CGHR), based out of St. Michael's
Hospital (SMH), Li Ka Shing Knowledge Institute (LKSKI) and the
University
of Toronto
(U of T) has focused on identifying disease priorities in developing countries
such as Bangalore, New Delhi, and (soon) Mumbai. CGHR has been recognized
globally, attracted significant research funds, and has influenced global health
policies through the scientific evidence it has generated with large-scale
epidemiological studies.
CGHR is now recruiting a Research
Business Manager that will help CGHR grow by managing financial,
budgetary, human resources and branding. We seek an energetic manager with
superb organizational skills who wants to shape a vibrant and growing research
centre dedicated to improving health of the global poor.
DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES:
Responsible for the
administrative leadership in relation to the delivery of research support
services, business services to the research liaison with SMH.

Manage operational
budget of approximately $2 million, leveraging the hospital provided budget
of $0.5 million.

Maintain financial
records for over $9 million in annual external research funding.

Direct overview of
research financial transactions.

Determine and implement
process or system improvements in order to provide timely and accurate
research financial information.

Ensure delivery of
financial support services, including financial reporting, purchasing,
accounts payables, audit, etc.

Oversee delivery of
advice to individual researchers on financial management of Research
accounts.

Prepare and monitor
budgets for Research Scientist Support, Research Administration and other
areas as required.

Improve evaluation
measures and information management capabilities within the Research
portfolio, including a database for grants, projects and publications,
monitor productivity and ensure effective use of available research
resource.

Oversee the review and
negotiation of Research contracts and grants in close collaboration with
SMH.

Work closely with the
Office of Research Administration (SMH) to ensure appropriate management of
funds.

Develop strong external
linkages to funding agencies and government to ensure compliance with
regulatory agencies.

Oversee preparation of
external agency reports.

Prepare for and oversee
the audit of research projects by the funding agencies and prepare responses
to auditors' questions and issues.

Responsible to link CGHR
branding with SMH Foundation and similar efforts.

Monitor all aspects of
the research portfolio to identify and mitigate financial risks.

Actively participate in
the development and implementation of a Research Strategic Plan for CGHR.

Support CGHR with the
development of new services and programs.

Maintain close working
relationship with SMH Hospital Foundation in support of Capital Campaign and
ongoing fundraising.

Manage CGHR's annual
scientific Advisory Board Meetings.

Work with Human
Resources to ensure appropriate policies and procedures are in place and
responsive to particular needs of research.

Supervise and oversee
the training and development of staff.

Manage direct staff of 2
and further 7-8 direct reports in India offices.

Ensure support for
appropriate management of over 30 research staff.

In collaboration with
Human Resources, ensure the establishment of fair and consistent position
definitions and remuneration for Research staff.
QUALIFICATIONS:
-
Business Administration
or Business of Commerce training with requisite years of management
experience.

A Master’s level in
business would be preferred, as well as completion of 3-5 years of a
Certified General Accountant or Certified Management Accountant (or
equivalent).

Excellent team skills
including mentoring junior staff.

Proactive problem solver
that meets the unique needs of a global health program.

Ability to build efficient,
motivated research administration team.

Able to identify and
recruit talented staff, and then manage them for peak performance.

Experience working in a
Hospital environment preferred.

Solid technical skills in
finance, human resource issues, contracts, negotiation, facilities, capital
projects, ethics.

Ability to work within a
strong team environment to develop and achieve shared goals and objectives.

Familiarity with
contracts/work in developing country settings.

Ability to travel overseas,
independently or with a team.

Superior written and verbal
communication skills together with strong problem solving skills.

Computer and internet
knowledge.

Demonstrated ability to
build/maintain integrity and trust.

Excellent attendance
required.
